NJ Transit’s executive director Steve Santoro has announced that the team will meet a December 2018 federal deadline for installing an emergency breaking system. The Federal Railroad administration initially required railroads to install the system by 2015, but later extended this deadline to 2018. The deadline involves hardware to be installed on each locomotive and on tracks with GPS capability. While NJ Transit has not yet installed positive train controls on the locomotives, they expect to have 11 percent of locomotives and 10 percent of towers equipped by June. By the end of the year, 39 percent of locomotives and 72 percent of towers are expected to be complete. Read more about the project here.
