The USDOT’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is accepting applications from railroads, suppliers, and state and local governments for $25 million in competitive grant funding for implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC). Touted by transportation experts as a safety-enhancing technology that helps prevent accidents, PTC is an integrated network of command control, communications, and information systems that precisely and efficiently controls train movements. The Dec. 31, 2018, deadline for PTC implementation mandated by Congress applies to railroads that transport poisonous-inhalation-hazardous (PIH) materials on mainlines or run regularly scheduled passenger or commuter rail services. We laud FRA for making this new grant money available to help quicken implementation of this life-saving technology. Click here for more.
